In LJK’s webinar on April 9th Sonja Blignaut and Tom Hanen discussed the concepts of complexity and complicatedness in relation to real-world situations and organizational challenges.

Tom Hanen
Sonja Blignaut, with two decades of experience in complexity, contrasts the predictable, structured nature of complicated systems with the unpredictable, interconnected nature of complex systems. She emphasizes that complexity arises from interconnections rather than the components themselves, making complex systems or problems non-reducible and adaptive, unlike complicated problems or systems which are stable and solvable.
Tom Hanen, from the Finnish border Guard, said complexity can be viewed as an enemy in his work due to its inherent unpredictability and the challenges it poses for planning and anticipating future events. He highlights the difficulties in dealing with complex situations, such as hybrid warfare and instrumentalized migration, which involve intertwined factors and constant change, making them resistant to simple solutions.
Both speakers agree that complexity is an inherent part of life and cannot be avoided. They suggest that embracing or befriending complexity, becoming comfortable with uncertainty, and fostering resilience and networking are essential for navigating complex environments. While most problems are merely complicated, they warn against overcomplicating responses to complexity. It can lead to a loss of clarity and goal orientation in organizations.
In summary, complexity is a context we live in and act within. It is neither good nor bad. It is a part of all living systems and, while it can be seen as an enemy or a friend, it is crucial to learn how to coexist with and navigate through it to thrive in today’s business environment.
